(artificial linguistic Internet computer entity), a Web-based chat bot. A.L.I.C.E. has twice passed the rigorous Turing Test, winning bronze Loebner Prizes in 2000 and 2001. (The name for the service is based on an 18th century hoax in which a "mechanical chess-playing automaton" beat almost all opponents.)
